Music Marketing Blog Post #1

Welcome to our music marketing project! Our goal is to increase the visibility and reach of our band Smue.

My group and I began by watching various music videos within our given genre (Rock) to gain a better understanding of the techniques and style used in these videos. After watching these videos we then got working. Since our band was new and on the come up we decided to go with a promotional/ social message music video. Based on our research and what Mrs S. told us we all agreed that music videos are one of the best ways to advertise a lesser known band. The song that we were given was called "Time is Running Out" by the rock band MUSE. After listening to the song numerous times, we decided to create our music video around a social statement, while still promoting our band and its members. We wanted our band to have a good social statement, in order to represent various issues that we all face as a society. In this case the issue was addiction as the song talks about the inability to let go of something, whether it be a lover, or in our video, the addiction to drugs.

After we figured out what the main theme of the video would be we began to plan out the various scenes, in the form of an elaborate story board. I included a couple pictures (at the end of the blog) of the story board for your future reference. Additionally, we also looked at our target audience and determined that mainly younger teenage boys and some older generation folks listen to this type of music. This not only helped us understand where we should distribute our content (i.e. Social Media, Snap chat, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) but it also played a huge role in the theme and techniques used in our video. However, there were many challenges that we faced while conducting our research. For example, we wanted to create a band that was cool, but also displayed good moral character, and promoted an overall helpful or positive message. This was challenging as our target audience (Mainly teenage boys) does not seem to care about social, and or life changing messages. Furthermore, we also had a tough time figuring out where to start performing as we did not want our band to play on the street, but at the same time we were not expecting them to play at Hard Rock stadium. We agreed upon the fact that the best place to start out would be a small club. Moreover, gaining attention on social media was tough at first because no one really knew who we were.

The next steps of our marketing project would be to book a show at a small club and really further try to market our brand and our music. We plan on distributing our music through online streaming services such as Spotify,  Apple music, YouTube music, and Sound cloud. Not only will this put our music out there, but it could also lead to some add revenue and it is practically free self promotion. Furthermore, we plan on contacting a label and sending them some of our music in hopes of maybe signing a deal with them, by doing this we hope to gain exposure through various radio stations (because of the label) which may further promote our music content. Lastly, we plan on having a small merch drop on our website just to see how sales are and further improve the popularity of our band.
