Media studies Portfolio

About me: Hey, my name is Cyrus and I am creating a blog for one of my classes. I am creating this blog as it has been assigned to me by one of my teachers. Additionally, I am creating this blog to learn more about how to use visual elements, and various fonts to make my conversational writing seem more appeasing. I don't really have any other information that seems to be that important.

 Genre: Action

To begin with, the typical target audience of  Action films, are really people of almost all ages (Excluding very little kids). Everyone from a Teenager to an old man loves to watch action films in some way shape or form. However, if you want to be more specific, mostly young men aged, 16-25 are the ones who show up to watch action films. This is said to be the case because there is a lot of violence, fast paced action, and sexual romance.

The main genre conventions of Actions films are as follows. The setting is often unbalanced both physically and socially which often leads to the rise of the conflict. Additionally, there is also a protagonist and an antagonist. An example of this would be in Batman The Dark knight. Batman is the protagonist, or the good hero, and the Joker is the antagonist. Moreover, there is also often an element of Romance that is incorporated into the film. Studies show that the romance, is a driving factor in luring young male adults into watching the film. Lastly, Action films also include a wide variety of weapons and props which are used by the characters in battle.

Genre conventions with production techniques: A common theme among action films, are their fast pacing, and numerous amount of quick and short cuts. Both of these elements supplement each other as the many cuts makes the film appear as if it is occurring much faster then it really is. Additionally, they use a lot of dramatic, non diagetic sound. Typically, the sound track is also of a higher pace and moves a lot faster. Moving on to camera techniques, many long shots are used as they display the characters full outfit, and gives the audience a more realistic account of the action, showing full body movements and all the different moves that the actor is performing. We also see a lot of chase scenes and back and forth taunting including humorous jokes between the characters. Often when dialogue between two characters is occurring a shot reverse shot transition is used to cut between the two characters speaking. Furthermore, there is no specific color scheme that is used in action films. Usually there is a good amount of neutral colors but, each film is different depending on the context of the scene.

Normally, for an action film the film is marketed through commercials, and sometimes even through merchandise. Many actors who star in big films often promote the film through various adds, both on social media, and on live television. Sometimes they even appear on McDonald's happy meals in their characters outfit. They also may be put on posters or other billboards in common locations. On average, most films spend around 35 million dollars on marketing.

Film #1 Batman The Dark Knight

In Batman The Dark Knight, not only is there a protagonist in the Batman, but there is also an antagonist in the Joker. This is a key characteristic of the Action genre, as it helps develop the story line and leads to the climax. Additionally, throughout the film there is a use of neutral hues. Batman wears all black and often performs his attacks at night. The joker however, is always seen wearing a shade of violet. This is a common color among antagonists, as it is associated with male characters who are usually wacky and weird. Moreover, the film uses a majority of long shots to show the full body movement and action of the character. Since there is a lot of fighting and a good amount of chase scenes in the movie the long shot helps the audience adsorb all of the action at once. It also helps give us a sense of the costume, and displays the cool suit that Batman is always wearing. Additionally, during these fight scenes an insert editing technique is used. This is a shot that is filmed from a different angle and then incorporated into the scene. This makes the scene more visually interesting and shows us the action from all angles. An example of this is when Batman shoots his grapple at the Joker and starts to punch him as he is on the ground. Finally, the use of the parallel editing technique helps to show the audience that although the action is happening in two different places, it is occurring at the same time. This technique is used during the boat scene when each boat has a device to blow up the other one. The cut between the two ships show that they are in a different location but imply that they are occurring at the same time.

Film #2  Casino Royal

Casino Royal is a perfect example of an action film. The production includes everything from fast cars to guns to suits, and even some torture. For starters, the film is shot mostly in a Casino and uses a mix of warm and neutral hues. Bonds Girl friend walks in to the casino wearing a red dress with red lipstick. This color is typically associated with fiery passion and love. As we learn later on in the scene, she walks in and kisses Bond on the ear while whispering something to him. This scene really does symbolize her sexual control over many of the characters as all the other men in the room also begin to look up at her. Additionally, during the scene where Bond is being tortured, he is depicted in a form of lighting that utilizes more warm hues. Conversely, Specter or the one who is torturing Bond is reflected using more cold hues. He is wearing a navy turtle neck with the lighting behind him being mostly dark. Bond however, is shirtless but lit up very well and appearing to be quite tan and bright. Moving on, a lot of camera tracing is used to follow the action closely. For example, when M is in the MI6 Headquarters, the camera pans left to right showing the audience that she is pacing, and hence emphasizes her restless mindset. The frame is also tighter and helps foster a deeper connection to her character. One classic scene that is also symbolic of the action genre is the use of a dutch angle shot to present Bond after he had been poisoned. By using this technique the directors were able to portray a sense of panic and craziness as Bond was loosing control of his body, and beginning to panic.
